For marathon runners who had just completed a grueling 26.2 mile run, doctors acknowledged the deep psychological trauma of losing a leg, but added that in most cases there had been little or no time for discussion as they moved to staunch the bleeding from already shattered limbs.
George Velmahos, chief of trauma surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital said that in many cases the limbs were simply “beyond salvation” and that surgeons had only “finished what the bomb started” as they moved to stop patients from bleeding to death as a result of their injuries.
“The experience is obviously overwhelming, we are all extremely sad we are suffering emotionally from what happened to the people of Boston,” he added, praising the doctors and surgeons who had rushed to the hospital to help out, including one who had just completed the race.
He added that the floor-level blast had caused multiple “lower-extremity” injuries among the 176 injured, of whom 17 still remained on critical list yesterday evening.
Nine children were reported injured, although none were critical according to the Boston Children’s Hospital. Among the worst hit was 11-year-old Aaron Hern who was reported to have suffered a shrapnel tear to his leg as stood beside his father to wait for his mother to cross the finish line.
